Build Back Better

NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure

Stakeholder Consultation and Economic Analysis of Land Use Planning Measures

Build Back Better (BBB) is the NSW Government’s use of the recovery, rehabilitation and reconstruction phases after a disaster to increase the resilience of nations and communities.

Communities across NSW are impacted by shocks, stresses, and changes due to variable climatic conditions, natural and anthropogenic hazards and risks, and population changes.

Recently, extreme weather, bushfires, drought, floods and the COVID-19 pandemic have highlighted the importance of community resilience to shocks and stresses, that communities need to be ready to adapt and respond.

The impacts and costs of extreme weather events are expected to increase as NSW’s population grows and areas exposed to natural hazards, such as floodplains, coastal regions, and lands adjacent to bushland, are urbanised.

The NSW Government is seeking to create more resilient places and communities through the planning system. The NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure (DPHI) is investigating how the planning system could set an appropriate framework that supports building back stronger, fast and more inclusively.
